Often situated close to the sea, from their cells the Celtic monks were constantly reminded of the flow and movement of the sea beneath their windows, and at night they would watch the procession of the stars across the cosmos. The gyratory movement of the spiral represents the whirling of the stars above a fixed earth. The symbol of eternal life, and at the center of the descending gyre, the still point where Heaven and Earth join, a state of balance. |
